Lake St Francis, Mar 03
Lake St Francis, famed for it dragonflies and marine alge found inland only here. This marine alge is also found in the Gulf of Mexico.  This picture was taken by Dave Clary, 1 March 2003, while on the endangered species tour, lead by Steve Alvarez.

    Youth Challenge workers at BLNWR
On 27 April, 2003, there was a major tree planting on the refuge.  There were several hundered trees planted by volunteers from the Friends of Bitter Lake and by Youth Challenge which the boys picture above are members of.  Dave Clary, who took this picture, said the boys released the snake right after this picture was taken.

Old turtle at Bitter Lake NWR, 2 feet long, approximately 75 years old.

Photo taken by Dave Clarey, 30MAR03.  This guy was well over 2 feet long; somebody  said that means he could be over 75 years old.  Also notice the encrustations on his back (ever wonder where the old term "mossback" came from?--this is it).  He was placidly chewing his way through the growth below the dragonfly overlook as Dave was taking pics.  I wonder whether he (she?) is the oldest animal on the refuge.

2002 Pecos Puzzel Sunflower, Bitter Lake NWR

Bitter Lake NWR has several listed or endangered species.  This sunflower is an endangered species.  It is the Pecos Puzzle Sunflower.  It is my understanding that out of the 200+ sunflower species this is the only one which likes its "feet wet".  It grows along the canals, ponds and in Hunter Marsh.    It is truly dramatic to see the golden rows of this, another of Bitter Lake's special species. Bikers enjoying the 8 mile Refuge tour route.

Like many other bikers, these two are enjoying a ride around the 8 mile tour route.   Remember to take plenty of water with you, wear your helmet/hat and some bug spray would be handy too.   There are also some walking paths.
The Refuge is open an hour before sunrise to an hour after sunset.

Whenever you come for a visit, please remember to sign in.  This is very important to us.

There are other creatures to be seen . . .

Muskrat Sally.

Hey, look!   There goes Muskrat Sally!
She is rushing off to turn in her membership with the Friends of Bitter Lake NWR.
Have you join yet?
It is so easy (& cheap), and you will be contributing to the health and welfare of the many fine creatures that call Bitter Lake NWR their home,
like Sally.
