"Red-mantled Saddlebags"

Tramea onusta "Red-mantled Saddlebags" of the Family Libellulidae, a red species with hind wings very broad at the base. This species possesses reddish-brown bands on the basal portion of the hind wings that resemble saddlebags. The abdomen is reddish-brown. The nymphs are seen actively crawling among the stems of aquatic vegetation and on floating algae masses. This dragonfly is fairly common in the United States. It is generally found at saline and freshwater sinkholes, along freshwater springs, and at impoundments in New Mexico.
