EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS FOR
33RD ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
Regardless of whether you are receiving your first Passing In Review or your second or third copy of our newsletter, you have some catching up to do. Our organization is developing at a rapid pace, and we have an exciting and promising future before us.
It was just over a year ago that the beginnings of a search for former USAREUR Headquarters Band members was inaugurated, and at that time the sole purpose of the search was to bring former band members from the late 50's and the early 60's together in a 40-year + or - reunion. Now that purpose has been expanded considerably. Instead of correspondence carrying the headings "33rd Army Band Reunion" or "33rd Army Band of the 50's and 60's", Frank Schlatter (56-58), coordinator for the affairs of the organization, is using stationery for the fledgling operation that carries the name 33rd Army Band Alumni Association, inasmuch as former band personnel are now being located from the 70's, 80's, and 90's.
Indeed, within the last couple of months over 40 former band members have been added to the rolls, and, as you will see on subsequent pages of this newsletter, listings of former band members who have not yet been located or checked in are also included. Band members who know where any of these individuals can be found should see that the missing members make contact with the association. We want all former 33rders to join together with us!
So What Else is New?
STEERING COMMITTEE SCHEDULED TO PLAN FOR '99 REUNION
A steering committee meeting to develop plans for the March 1999 reunion of the 33rd Army Band Alumni Association is set for April 18 at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, Virginia, the site of the '99 reunion. The members of the steering committee include Herbert Bilhartz, Fred Boots, Andy Eschelman, Jim Kracmer, Paul A. Martin, Richard McFerron, David Nutter, Frank and Carole Schlatter, Bryan Shelburne, Barrie Spessler, Bill and Alma Steiden. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m, to continue through a working lunch, and to end at 2 or 3 p.m. Anyone who is not presently included on the steering committee and who would like to be involved should contact Frank Schlatter. Telephone: 505-622-6898.
THE ASSOCIATION NOW HAS A WEBSITE
With the assistance of his computer-guru son Richard, Frank Schlatter has developed a website for the 33rd Army Band Alumni Association. The website presently carries modified copies of our earlier newsletters, and it will contain a modified version of this newsletter. Sections of the website will be devoted to pictures--official and otherwise--of the band members over the decades. The site also contains links to the current 33rd Army Band web page and to Ted's Military Band Center, the latter site being a valuable source for information on other bands and for making connections with former band colleagues. Our alumni website is located at:
http://www.rt66.com/~obfusa/33rd
For those of you who are wondering, the "obf" stands for Old Band Friends!
ARCHIVES FOR 33RD MEMORABILIA AND AN AGENCY FOR THE SOUNDS OF THE 33RD--PROJECTED NEEDS FOR THE ASSOCIATION
In the recent contacts that have been made with former members of the 33rd Army Band it has been learned that various individuals have in their personal effects items related to the band that are sure to be of interest to other band members. For example, when Chan Johnson (57-63) was located, he noted that he had a reel-to-reel tape containing musical selections of the 33rd from the time he was with the band. Chan subsequently transferred the sounds to a cassette and forwarded the cassette to Frank Schlatter, impressing Frank mightily with the results!
Then, in a telephone conversation with Julie Belle (78-79), Frank learned that Julie has LP records of the 33rd from 1975-1993. However, Julie and husband Milton Belle, Jr.'s (79-93) sound equipment is not necessarily up to the task of making a good transfer of the records to cassettes. It is clear, though, that once the records have been transferred to tape, 33rd alumni who would like to have access to such memorable artifacts will want to have some way to acquire them. Thus, it would appear that the alumni association will want to develop a department that can oversee the storage and the at-cost sales of such tapes as are available.
Naturally, we may also want pictures and other print materials that are important to former 33rd band members to be pulled together. For now, of course, the newsletter itself and our website can serve as a limited form of photo album/scrapbook. But for memorabilia, such as the document cited in our previous newsletter (The Selection of the Candidate- Unknown from the Trans-Atlantic Phase of World War I), we might wish to set up some person or persons within the association to take care of such information.
The views of 33rd alumni on these and other matters will be sought over the months to come and at the business meeting that we hold at the '99 reunion. The '99 reunion business meeting will also be the occasion for an organizational structure to be established, for officers to be elected, and committee chairs to be named. At this time you are requested to forward whatever suggestions or comments you may have regarding the development of the alumni association to Frank Schlatter, address given at end of this newsletter. Certainly, too, your reactions to the newsletter itself and what is printed herein are also welcome.
DIRECTORY FOR THE 33RD ARMY BAND ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
As indicated at the outset of this newsletter, the 33rd Army Band Alumni Association is now growing rapidly and we who are its members will want to be able to keep track of our old band friends who are on the alumni roster. In line with the sentiments of the band members who met in Albuquerque in July of 1997, we will also want to include the names of spouses and significant others, whom we see as members of our extended family. So a directory for the association will definitely be in order.
LISTING OF 33RDERS "FOUND" SINCE THE LAST NEWSLETTER

A Few Notes From 33rders
"Your latest Passing in Review arrived today. What a fine publication! I was especially pleased to see the name of Floyd Clements, who was 1st Sgt with me in my early days with the 33rd, and also trombonist Tom Kolbe, who was another fine musician/soldier." -Fred Boots
"Wow! A 33rd Alumni Association? Of course I'm interested! While in the unit, I used to publish the Heidelberg Hind-Quarterly which, much to the disdain of CWO4 McConnell was an outlet for frustrations, parodies, and just general griping.... There is also another reunion scheduled for Jan. 1, 2000 in Munich at the Hofbraeu house for members of my 'class', many of whom have come up missing in the past few years." -Andy Eschelman
"Thank you for the email and the invite to be a part of the 33rd Army Band Alumni. I am very interested and excited at the prospect of participating in the organization." -Ken Erion
"Hello! I found out through Beth Sanders who found out through Laura Wachowski that you or someone you know is rounding up a list of 33rd Army Band members... I bet you are responsible for a lot of nice reunions as a result of such a list." -John Martin
[Ed. Note: Beth Sanders, where are you? We've heard from John Martin, who heard from you, who heard through Laura, but we haven't heard directly from you. We need to know where you can be reached!]
QUESTION ANSWERED FROM LAST NEWSLETTER: The trumpet player who played the echo at the Epinal, France ceremony for the unknown soldier in 1958 has been identified as Dick Prestage.
