ITINERARY SET FOR
MINNEAPOLIS
Lorelei Provides Details for Our June Gig
From Thursday, June 21 to Sunday, June 24, members of the 33rd ABAA will hold their next reunion at the Doubletree Hotel Minneapolis Airport at the Mall, 7901 24th Ave. So., Bloomington, MN 55425. Lorelei Giddings (Oboe, Jan. 77-June 79), President of the Association, has provided the following briefing for the membership.
"The June 2001 33rd Army Band Reunion approaches! We have gotten many positive responses back from the alumni stating their intentions to attend. I am personally very excited (albeit somewhat stressed-out) about planning for this event and seeing you all. Gene Karjala and I are trying to put together an event that will allow us to reconnect with those with whom we served, give us the pleasure of reacquainting ourselves with those we've met at other reunions, and the real excitement of meeting alumni colleagues for the first time. We have a kind of schedule etched out (see below - not set in stone yet as we are still contacting some of the places we're planning on visiting)."
"Nearly all of you who said you were coming were interested in the Boat on the Mississippi, so that is something that we are pretty sure to have in the schedule. We have many things that we could do, but we're trying to keep focused on the reason for the reunion, and that is to enjoy our common memories of our time in Heidelberg and enjoying our time together."
"With this newsletter you'll be receiving information to reserve your room with the hotel. We're hoping that you'll come in on Thursday, but some of you may choose to come in on Friday. In any case, there is a courtesy shuttle to the hotel from the airport and also to the Mall from the Hotel. (Despite the fact that it is just across the street, it is a VERY big street.)
"Although there is considerable time for registering with the hotel (note that the room reservation deadline for the Doubletree is May 22)and for the reunion itself (mailed sufficiently in advance so as to arrive on or before June 1), you are encouraged to send in your registrations sooner rather than later. See the Registration Form included with the newsletter." (Note: The Registration Form is not included with this on-line copy of the newsletter.)
"I've already heard from some of you by phone or e-mail, and am really looking forward to seeing you here in Minneapolis in June!"

Lou Driever (Jan 55-Jul 56) wrote: "For the past couple of years I have been trying to track down Maurie Maine, 54-56. He had lived and taught in Cokato, Minnesota, west of Minneapolis. I last talked to him several years ago when he was in Minneapolis with Rollie Anfinson and his wife. He indicated that his health was not good at that time. After that I lost contact with him and was unable to reach him by phone or mail. Several weeks ago we pulled up a Maurie Maine, deceased, in the Social Security files on the Internet. He was listed as a resident of the county just west of Cokato. Sent an e-mail to the website of the newspaper in that county asking for help in locating him and an "anonymous" person who just likes to help "old vets" sent his son's name and phone number."
"I called him and learned that Maurie died on Nov. 6, 1999 in an Army Veteran's Home in Minnesota. He had evidently suffered several years with Parkinson's disease. So, another of us old guys bites the dust! Can we wait another three years to return to Heidelberg together? See you in Minneapolis in June."
Doug Youra (57-58): "I look forward to each issue of Passing in Review to read about each and every one of you, to be reminded by word and picture of the good times we had in Heidelberg. (Thank you, Frank, for all your editorial efforts.)"
"Looking forward to meeting everybody next year in the Twin Cities and am anxiously awaiting a return to Heidelberg in a few years."
"My health is good (prostate cancer in remission) I continue to work part time--and am slowly making the transition to full time retirement. Grandsons keep me active--cottaging, summer and winter fishing. Wife and children in good health also. I continue to play a lot of bridge. Finally bought me a tuba and joined a community band. Great to be back in action."
Daniel (Flamo) Caron (73-84): "Would it be possible for you to publish a roster of who the people are in the 99 reunion photo included with the directory? Can identify some but would be interested in who they all are. Thanks." [Ed. Note: "Flamo" was informed that we'd try to get an accurate reading at the Minneapolis reunion.]
John Morgan (65-68), in response to a request from the editor, provided some information about himself. He retired from the Army in'92, after having served from 71-76 in the U.S. Army Band in Washington, 78-92 (commissioned and served as Medivac Pilot, computer geek and some other things, retiring as a Major).
After retiring, he worked at Hewlett-Packard for 7 years and now works at Information Management Research as a Director of Program Management. Now the current principal trombone player in the Littleton Symphony Orchestra in Denver area and also plays the trombone and euphonium in the Classical Brass Quintet.
Jack McNair (69-72): "We have never met you but I have heard so much about you that I feel as if I know you. I appreciate all you do with the 33rd Alumni Assn. Thanks again to you and your efforts, I have been able to contact old friends that I thought I would never hear from again. Oh, by the way, I probably should also give you the correct dates I served with the 33rd. I noticed in the directory the date was some time in 1980. Actually, the dates should be 69-72. I was in Heidelberg in 1980, or I should say from 1976 - 1980. I was the Staff Bands NCO working out in Schwetzingen. During the time I was there I worked for Dan Brittain, Stan Cornett, and last but certainly not least, Brian Shelburne. All three of those guys were just super."
Linda (Vrancheff) Granzow (not a 33rder but adopted): "Howdy! Bob played trumpet (and only trumpet) in the band; I (Linda) was a sax/bassoon player in the 8th Infantry Div. band during the 70s (although many of my friends, such as Lorelei Giddings, Andy Eschelman, and David Nutter, among others, "adopted me" as one of the 33rd band members whenever I visited Heidelberg)."
"On a not-as-light note, Bob's dad has been ailing, off and on, for the last couple of years or so and the Granzow family has decided that summer of 2001 will be reserved for a major family reunion where everybody can get together. So--our work commitments being what they are, the family reunion will constitute our summer vacation and we wont be able to make the Alumni reunion in Minneapolis. We really had hoped to do so, but can't do both, so the obvious choice has been made already. Please pass the word on, especially to Lorelei. I was looking forward to meeting some new faces (such as yours) and especially to seeing Lory and many of my old "buds" again, not to mention playing my sax (which I have been practicing diligently) in the Alumni band. We will DEFINITELY shoot for the next shebang. Hope you are having a great New Year thus far, and take good care."
Mary McConnell (76-80): "You have me on your list and I appreciate getting the information. Wish I had been able to attend the get-together in Washington, D.C. Russell is buried in Arlington Cemetery. I am writing...to ask if you would want some pictures and other 33rd historical documents."
"We really enjoyed our nearly four years in Heidelberg and were sorry to leave. But that's the Army."
"I have several names that are not on your list. There was a couple, Jon and Linda Julian, who played clarinet (I think). Of course, there are others. I think I may have some rosters in our dusty attic, as well. Are you interested?" [Ed. Note: The editor expressed his interest, and Mary sent him a batch of pictures, including one 12"x15" of the band in '78, and another 12"x12", a reproduction of the latter is included on the next page. Mary also sent a number of postcards showing the 33rd, circa '78. A copy of the card is shown below. Her packet also included some programs and a bright yellow poster for the Bremerhaven Musikschau, 6 Oct. '78.]
