    Iraqi War & Terrorist Activity
Stifle Reunion Plans of Most 33rders

Reunion Still On For Anyone Interested in Attending

This issue of Passing In Review has been delayed in hopes that subsequent to the fighting in Iraq there would be a resurgence of interest on the part of 33rders to attend the reunion scheduled for Heidelberg in early September.  Unfortunately, terrorist activity since the Iraqi conflict has apparently combined with the war in Iraq to reduce the interest of most 33rd Alumni members in traveling to Germany this year.

But the reunion is still on for those who wish to attend--even if the number of attendees may be very small.  (If the number attending is fewer than hoped, we'll simply hire smaller buses for whatever trips we take, and, depending on the size of the turn-out, we may find that we can actually make last-minute arrangements for some meals at local Heidelberg restaurants.) So, for those of you who still want to attend the reunion but haven't made your travel and housing arrangements, you should probably try to make your reservations by late June or early July.  It would also be helpful if you forwarded your travel plans to Frank Schlatter, Conference Coordinator, so that our reunion  activities can be finalized.

To make your air travel arrangements and hotel reservations contact Diane Lam, our Travel Agent,  at WEE TRAVEL, 1380 West Midway Blvd., Bloomfield, CO 80020, telephone numbers: 303/465-2118 and 800/327-4006.  (Fax: 303/465-2465.)  Airline tickets are to be paid for at the time the reservations are made, or within 7 days of when the tickets are ordered.  As noted in the last newsletter, when you make your arrangements with WEE Travel, you can do so with a credit card, but there is an additional $25 charge for that method of payment.  A cashier's check a personal check or a credit card access check are all appropriate methods of payment.

When making room reservations for the Hotel Zagreb in Schwetzingen, Diane will want to know the number of persons for whom rooms will be needed and the beginning and ending dates for your stay.  Room reservations can be made using your credit card.  You can make your own air travel arrangements if you wish, but room reservations need to be made through Wee Travel.

The dates for the reunion are essentially from September 4 through September 12, with travel days according to each traveler's plans:  on Tuesday or Wednesday, September 2 and 3 and Friday-Monday, September 12-15.

PattonBarracksVets.  Over the last several months, Frank Schlatter, Passing In Review editor, has had the pleasure of being on the e-mail list of the Yahoo group Patton Barracks Vets.  Anyone in the 33rd ABAA who did one or more tours at duty at Patton Barracks will find the group of interest because of the stories that are told and the pictures that are displayed.  You can join the group and participate in the reminiscing that occurs.  Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PattonBarracksVets/.

Frank Gomes May 55-Apr 56):  In February Frank wrote to indicate that he and Phyllis are now in their home in Port St. Lucie, Florida.  Street address is 355 SW Lake Forest Way.  Zip Code: 34986.  Frank's phone number is 772-344-0181.  E-mail: fbgomes@adelphia.net.

Rick McFerron 75-78 wrote in March to say that he and Teri had sent for their passports and that he had just ordered some Cds from Amazon to brush up on his German.  "So we're getting ready for the September trip," he said. Rick's e-mail: jrmcferr@iup.edu.

Ed Willumsen (53-55) wrote in early April to indicate that they wouldn't be able to make it to the Heidelberg reunion, but not because of the world situation.  He said he and his wife "hope you lucky people who get to make the trip have a blast."

On behalf of Robert Granzow (80's), Linda Granzow provided an in memoriam notice with regard to Nicole Elkins, wife of 36 years of Ken Elkins, who passed away on 26 March of this year.  Nicki had apparently been ill for some time prior to her passing.  Ken's e-mail: crowfrog@prodigy.net

Tom Schafer (tschafer@speakeasy.net) wrote in April and made reference to the 33rd Army Band being in attendance at the ceremony for the Unknowns in Epinal, France in 1958, saying that he was hopeful that someone in the 33rd ABAA could help him with finding some documentation of the event.

He wrote: "I was on active duty in the Coast Guard stationed in Rhodes, Greece at that time and was selected to be a member of the honor guard.  Unfortunately, the only record of the event that I was ever able to obtain (and still have) was the program that was passed out at the ceremony.  Does anybody have any photographs of the event or know where I can obtain some.  I have some that I took myself before and after the ceremony but naturally couldn't take any during the ceremony itself.  I was the person that carried the wreath after the selection was made and followed the casket to the hearse and aboard the airplane.

"The ceremony and cemetery affected me greatly at the time and has continued to be one of my most powerful memories.  Any help in locating records of the event will be greatly appreciated."  Tom can also be contacted at 504-394-9607.  Fax: 504-394-7716

Don Craig (Jan 74-July 83 & Jan 89-Jan 92) wrote in April to see if the reunion in Heidelberg is still on and to provide a change of address for the 33rd ABAA directory.  His new address is 110 Gentle Hills Circle, Grand Forks, ND 58102.  His e-mail address: teamcraigdml@aol.com.

Adelbert Corbin 67-68 is alive and well, living at 4218 Windchime Lane in Lakeland, FL 33811.  Kae, his wife, wrote on his behalf and provided their home phone number: 863-644-1400.  Adelbert owns Corbin Stamp and Coin store in Brandon, Florida and still plays the French horn in the Imperial Symphony Orchestra in Lakeland.   While with the 33rd he also played trombone in the stage band and baritone horn in the marching band. Kae expressed their thanks to those who put together such a great web resource for the 33rd Army Band.
