So here are the
principles that I try to live by. My own personal code of
honor, or "morality," if you insist. Part of it was the way I
was raised, and part of it was arrived at after much soul-searching.
Tolerance: My sense of honor applies to me and me alone. Other people have
different philosophies, and that's okay. I try to learn 'em
and understand 'em (and allow for their little
quirks), but diversity is what makes the world fun.
Compassion: Helping other people is good. Just about all systems of philosophy or religion include this point, and I agree. I feel pain when I cause pain to others, so I try not to do that.
Moderation: I have worth, but not much more so than any other person out there. I should get my share, but I don't necessarily deserve more. And fighting others to reduce their share is usually wrong. The best way to solve it is to work together to increase everyone's share.
Self-reliance: The world is not just or unjust, and the sooner you come to terms with that, the better. If you can deal with the bad times and come back to yourself, you'll be stronger and wiser. But always count on yourself first.
Integrity: I try to keep my word, complete my tasks, and never be caught in a lie (which means I never lie about important things.) To be trusted makes me feel good, so I do all I can to be trustworthy.
I dislike the words "good" and "evil", and I don't
believe there is any embodiment of either out there, tempting people
to act one way or
another. Everyone is responsible for his own actions. But I admit
that there are people out there who deliberately hurt others. If you
are one of these, I
will avoid you, or fight you if you try to do it to me or those I care
about.
